Hello, I’m Liz Barka, the founder of Magical Ceremonies.
For over seven years, I’ve had the privilege of being an independent celebrant, guiding couples and families through some of the most meaningful moments of their lives. My journey here has been anything but ordinary—before becoming a celebrant, I was a teacher, an actor and performer, and a healing massage therapist. Each chapter of my life has brought unique skills and perspectives, I've invested in all my training, all of which now enrich the ceremonies I create.
Why Wedding Law Reform Matters
Recently, the UK government announced the most significant overhaul of wedding law in England and Wales since the 19th century. It's about time!! This reform is set to transform how couples marry and how celebrants like myself serve them. It is vital in this day and age to have a law that reflects the demands for inclusivity and diversity so that couples have the freedom to celebrate and legalise their love in ways that reflect their beliefs and personalities.
For Celebrants
Legal Recognition: The proposed reforms could finally recognise independent celebrants as legitimate officiants, allowing us to conduct ceremonies that are both meaningful and legally binding. This means couples won’t have to go through separate legal formalities—they can have everything combined in one seamless, personal ceremony
Professional Respect: It’s a huge step forward for professional respect and visibility. I’m proud to be part of a movement that values artistry, kindness, and the magic of personal connection.
Creative Freedom: With the law shifting focus from buildings to officiants, celebrants will have greater creative freedom to design ceremonies that truly reflect each couple’s story.
For Couples
More Choice: Couples will be able to marry in a wider range of locations—from beaches and gardens to heritage sites and even their own homes—making their wedding truly personal and memorable.
Inclusivity: The reforms will allow for more inclusive ceremonies, including Faith, interfaith, and non-religious weddings, which will finally be legally recognised. This is especially important for couples whose beliefs or backgrounds haven’t been reflected in the current system
Affordability & Simplicity: By removing the need for a separate legal ceremony, couples can save time and money and focus on celebrating their love in a way that feels authentic to them.
Next Steps
The AOIC (Association of Independent Celebrants) has highlighted the importance of including independent celebrants in these reforms, noting that ceremonies led by independent celebrants are no less dignified or serious than those offered by other officiants. Lets keep talking about things so that couples can have their choice - spiritual, multi faith, no faith, part religious, humanist or civil!
